Board Member Bio's
Alejandro Arredondo, O.D was appointed to the State Board of Optometry by Governor Schwarzenegger. Since 1988, he has served as an optometrist in private practice. Arredondo previously served as an optometrist intern for the Veterans Administration Outpatient Clinic and the Optometric Center of Los Angeles in 1987. Prior to that, he served as an optometrist intern at the Silas B. Hayes Army Community Hospital Optometry Clinic from 1986 to 1987. Arredondo is a member of the California Optometric Association, the American Optometric Association and the Rio Hondo Optometric Society. (Term: 11/07 through 6/11)
Martha Burnett-Collins, O.D., 50, of Elk Grove, has been appointed to the State Board of Optometry. She has served as an optometrist for Kaiser Permanente since 1986. She is currently in the US Air Force since 1989 and has achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. She was called to active duty in 1991 to serve in Operation Desert Storm. She was part of a medical readiness team that served a Humanitarian Mission in El Salvador last year. Burnett-Collins is a member of the Military Officers Association of America and the National Optometric Association. She is also a member of the prestigious Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Lee A. Goldstein, OD, MPA was appointed as a licensee to the Board by Governor Schwarzenegger and is currently serving as Board President. He has chaired the Enforcement and Strategic Planning Committees. An optometrist for over 40 years, he has particular concerns for general practice, contact lenses, complex cases and public health. He served on the Board of the California Optometric Association from 1993 to 1999 and served as President from 1997 to 1998. Dr. Goldstein has been associated with American Red Cross since 1976, served as California State Chairman from 1991-1996, Pacific Regional Committee from 1996-1999, and the National Board of Governors from 1999-2005. Currently, he is facilitating Chapter Board and Leadership Development with the Red Cross national organization. He earned Bachelor and Doctor of Optometry degrees from the University of California, Berkeley with highest honors and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He has a Masters Degree in Public Administration (Health Services) from the University of Southern California. (Term: 04/03 through 6/11)
Monica Fascher Johnson of Ladera Ranch was appointed as a public member to the Board by Governor Schwarzenegger. She has been a corporate counsel with BAX Global, Inc., a supply chain management and transportation solutions company, since June 2005. Previously, Johnson was an associate with the law firm of Stephan, Oringher, Richman & Theodora from 2002 to 2005 and with Yoka & Smith from 1996 to 2002. (Term: 12/05 through 06/09)
Kenneth Lawenda, O.D. was been appointed to the State Board of Optometry by Governor Schwarzenegger. He has served as an optometrist in private practice since 1970 and chief of optometry for the Cedar Sinai Medical Center since 2001. Lawenda is a member of the Los Angeles County Optometric Society, past president of the California Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association. (Term: 11/07 through 6/09)
Fred Naranjo was appointed as a public member to the board by Gov. Gray Davis. Naranjo is president and owner of Scarborough Insurance Agency in San Francisco, which he started in November 1987. His previous experience includes five years in the Sales and Marketing Department of Blue Cross of California where he served as special assistant to the president. He is currently a member of the board of regents of St. Mary's College in Moraga and serves on the Universal Healthcare Taskforce for the city and county of San Francisco under Mayor Gavin Newsom. Mary Galvan Rosas was appointed as a public member to the board by the Senate Rules Committee. Previously, she was a field representative for Senator Barbara Lee and worked with the California Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. She served as chair of the community advisory commission for the city of Pittsburg, vice chair of the Latino Leadership Council of Contra Costa County and a board member of Hispanos Organized for Political Equity. Katrina Semmes of Sacramento was appointed as a public member to the board by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. Since 2005, she has served as a financial advisor for UBS Financial Services. Semmes previously served as an intergovernmental relation's analyst for the California Performance Review in 2004. Prior to that, she served as a program analyst and grant officer for the Governor's Office on Service and Volunteerism from 2003 to 2004. (Term: 05/07 through 05/10)
Richard Simonds, OD, of San Diego was appointed as a licensee to the Board by Governor Schwarzenegger. He has been in private practice in San Diego since 1989. Previously, Dr. Simonds served as managing optometrist at the Sports Arena and College Area Offices of Eye Care USA, director of Optometry and Surgical Co-Management with the Eye Treatment Center and president of the Ophthalmic Co-Management Section of the National Eye Research Foundation. Susy Yu, OD was appointed as a licensee to the Board by Governor Schwarzenegger. She is the Director of Business Strategy and Operations Support for Permanente Vision Services, a division of the Southern California Permanente Medical Group (Kaiser Permanente). She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Berkeley, Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Optometry degrees from the University of California, Berkeley School of Optometry, and a Masters in Business Administration degree from the Anderson School at the University of California, Los Angeles.
